Julie Palmer and Phil PreenJulie Palmer and Phil Preen are a folk singing duo from Lady Bay in Nottingham. Julie and Phil, along with Dave Walters and Claire Halliday also run The Poppy Folk Club which meets once a month at The Poppy and Pint pub in Lady Bay.
Julie Palmer refuses to be tied down to a style of singing, and is equally at home performing a Child ballad, a rousing chorus song, or a comedy number. Her main interest though is in finding hidden gems of songs in old books, and bringing them back to life with her own interpretation of what the collectors preserved for us. Phil Preen has an eclectic repetoire of songs, and basically sings anything that takes his fancy. Phil also plays concertina and tin whistle, and plays percussion with a ceilidh band: The Bang On The Wall Band. Julie and Phil are regulars at the Grand Union Folk Club in Barrow upon Soar. Bill asked some of the club regulars if they would like to do support spots for some of the guest nights. In the publicity for these nights he described us as "stalwarts of the club", so we decided to call ourselves The Stalwarts. However we've gone off this name a bit, so we might just stick with Julie Palmer and Phil Preen for now. Someone obviously enjoyed our performance at Grand Union, as on the strength of this we got a booking at The Robin Hood Folk Club at The Stumble Inn in Long Eaton. We were also booked again at Grand Union in 2013, this time supporting Keith Kendrick and Sylvia Needham on 28th January. We were also invited to perform at The Folk Night on Tuesday 2nd July 2012, organised by Nick Burdett at The Golden Shield in Fleckney in aid of The Samaritans. Julie and Phil continue to perform both separately and together at various folk clubs locally. |
